Subtitle Edit download

The current release is Subtitle Edit 5.2.0, published on 10 September 2026. The links point to the latest release, so they keep working after new versions come out.

Standard setup with Start menu shortcuts. Settings are stored in %APPDATA%\Subtitle Edit.

Supported Windows versions

The project's stated minimum is Windows 10 version 22H2 (build 19045) or newer, fully updated. Earlier Windows 10 builds can fail at startup with a .NET runtime error.

How to check your build

Press Win+R, type winver and press Enter. The dialog shows the version (for example "Version 22H2") and the OS build (for example "19045.xxxx").

Installation instructions (short version)

  1. Run the installerDouble-click SubtitleEdit-Windows-x64-Setup.exe and follow the setup wizard. If you downloaded a ZIP, extract it to a folder you can write to (for example C:\Tools\SubtitleEdit).
  2. Start Subtitle EditLaunch it from the Start menu, or from the extracted folder if you use the portable build.
  3. Add FFmpeg and libmpvAccept the prompts to download them, or go to Options → Settings. FFmpeg draws the waveform and libmpv plays video.

Subtitle Edit is developed in the open on GitHub by Nikolaj Olsson (the "Nikse" in nikse.dk) and a community of contributors. Subtitle Edit 5 is a rewrite built with the cross-platform Avalonia UI framework. It runs natively on Windows, Linux and macOS. It is free, with no ads and no feature limits, and the developer accepts support through GitHub Sponsors and PayPal.

The application works offline. It does not collect or upload your subtitle or media files. Data is sent only when you choose an optional online service, such as cloud translation, cloud OCR or cloud speech-to-text. In that case it goes straight to that provider.

Only download from the official GitHub Releases page

Subtitle Edit is free. If a site asks you to pay for it, pushes a "download manager", or bundles extra offers into the installer, it is not an official source.

  • Check that the address bar shows github.com/SubtitleEdit/subtitleedit before you download.
  • Compare the file name with the ones listed above. The official file names have no version number in them.
  • If Windows SmartScreen or your antivirus stops the file, read common installation errors before you override the warning.
